[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] IP Multicast Support

Subject: IP Multicast Support

Can anyone give me some information on the status of IP Multicast Support
in the TCP/IP community. I've read the various RFC's up through August 1989
by Steve Deering. I've also spent some time implementing some lower
level multicast support on a Sparcstation and Sun OS 4.1.

I'm interested in hearing about implementations, both commercial and
educational. I'm particularly interested in addressing the issues with
routing of multicast packets.

Thanks in advance for any responses!

Steve Deering is still working on multicasting. John Moy and the IETF
Multicast OSPF Working Group have pretty much finished a design for
extending OSPF to route multicast packets. I have two designs (similar,
but trade-offs) for BGP which I'm in the middle of introducing into the
BGP Working Group for inter-AS routing of multicast packets. It's on
the list for the Inter-Domain Policy Routing folks but I'm pretty sure
no one there has done any real design work yet. I don't know of any
actual *implementation* work on any of this yet -- for OSPF and BGP we
wanted to make sure it all fit together before we started implementing
either.

It is our (Cornell's) intention to implement forwarding multicasts in
both OSPF and BGP on the gatedaemon base, Real Soon Now.

There are a number of people out there working on transport protocols.
The most recent I have heard about is Keith Marzullo (here at Cornell).
