Take a look at "Software Practice and Experience" Vol. 9, p 701-9, at the article by John Lyons. He describes how U. New South Wales got its start on Unix by writing a U200 emulator that ran under Unix V6 on an 11/40. The emulator running time shared under Unix replaced a "dedicated" emulation program running under RSX-11D. John Lyons, by the way, was the author of the wonderful "Commentary on the Unix Operating System" which taught the secrets of V6 to so many... Rick.
