[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] ncsa telnet

michel@CCT.BBN.COM (Tony Michel) (04/01/88)

Well, Thanks! I got a lot of helpful offers about how to get RFCs! More to
the point, enough people were surprised by the notion of Telnetting from
a Mac, that it's worth a few sentences.

My Mac SE is linked with many other Macs on my floor, and to some LaserPrinters
and to a gateway, by AppleTalk. The gateway is built by Kinetics. It is co
connected in turn to the BBN Ethernet segment in my building, which somehow
is gateway'ed into the INternet. On my Mac i run a program created by
the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), which implements
a terminal emulator, user Telnet, TCP and IP, and knows how to package the
IP datagrams up in AppleTalk to send them across to the Kinetics gateway.
My Mac is a real host on the Internet!

This system works very well, and is shockingly cheap.

Having said something nice, now let me grumble. The correct solution to
my previous query would be to have the NCSA software support User FTP, and
I'm not sure why it does not. Perhaps they have plans? Anyway, for
something FREE, it's great.

While waiting for User FTP, I have to log into your system, however.
The problem is not confined to RFCs. This approach means that I cannot
access any of the anonymous ftp services anywhere. Naturally it is possible
to use a third party that has User FTP, but I really believe in this desk-top
computing stuff! I don't want to log into my klunkey old UNIX system, if
I can avoid it.

Hmm, while I'm grumbling...it would be nice if the terminal emulator did
a better job of emulating the VT100. How about installing tn3270 as well?
If only it could do tnUNISCOPE as well, I'd be in Seventh Heaven!

Anyway, Thanks, NCSA! It's a great program just as it stands (V 1.12)

Does anyone know what changes I will have to make on NCSA Telnet Version 2.1
to fix the bugs for Microsoft C 4.0 or 5.0 compiling.

Just with ftp. No problem with telnet. And just when I ftp to vms through
the DEC Ultrix IP/Decnet gateway. If I ftp to unix, or to vms directly,
no problem. The problem: when I do ls or dir, the display comes to my pc
screen looking like LF is missing after CR. I tried uncommenting a line
in config.tel concerning crnul, no effect. Help, anyone ?

What version of ftpbin and telbin are you using?

We had a similar problem here, using telbin to connect to a vax 3500 running
cmu-tek-tcp. The problem showed up when users went to change their passwords.
The would get "invalid password" or something like that when entering the
new password. Turns out that cmu-tcp was negotiating BINARY telnet option, the
PC says 'ya, sure' but then didn't correctly implement binary EOL syntax.

The quickest fix we came up with is for telbin to say 'no binary mode' unless
connected to a 3270 type machine. (So, version 2.2C is broken, and tries binary
mode, and 2.2D says no to binary mode, but if it said yes, it'd still
be broken).

Ftpbin strips off incoming telnet options and discards them. Perhaps
(I have no idea why this would happen) your vax is sending a DO Binary option on
the ftp control channel. If the PC ignores it, and never answers,
what does the vax do?

The CRNUL option only effects what is sent to a host system when <RETURN> is pressed
on the PC keyboard while using telbin or tn3270. (2.2TN).

larry@nstar.rn.com (Larry Snyder) (03/10/91)

I am having problems getting ncsa telnet working from my dos machine -

ftp works just fine - but telnetting to the unix boxes results in what
appears to be multiple concurrent logins and improper key mapping

could someone be so kind as to mail me their telnet configuration file
along with their keyboard remapping file?

thanks - larry

I have been hearing alot about ncsa telnet on the net. I understand
from the messages that it is for macs and pc systems. Where is there an
anonymous ftp site that has this software?? I would like to try it
since we are concidering some commercial packages. An info on sites would
be appreciated.
