[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Multi-protocol Routers with Compression

scoggin@delmarva.delmarva.COM (John Scoggin) (04/06/91)

We are currently operating a multi-protocol (IP, XNS, IPX, SNA...) internet
using Wellfleet bridge/routers with 672 kbps links. While this configuration
works quite nicely, it is a bit expensive to implement in smaller offices.

Is anyone aware of a multi-protocol bridge/router which incorporates data
compression techniques for operation on low-speed (56-384 kbps) lines?
It is difficult to justify T-1 circuits to an office with 10-15 office
workers, but a DDS or fractional T-1 circuit might be feasible. A straight-
forward bridge/router without compression would give unacceptable performance
(IMHO) when retrieving mapping data from our NFS servers.

Many thanks for any ideas!
