               DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE
               UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO
               SEMINAR ACTIVITIES

COMPUTER SCIENCE COLLOQUIUM - Wednesday, June 30, 1982.

Prof. J. A. George of this department will speak on
"Some Ideas and Unsolved Problems in Sparse Matrix
               Computations."

               TIME: 3:30 PM

               ROOM: M&C 5158

               ABSTRACT

This talk will deal with some algorithms and computa-
tional techniques that have proven to be effective in
sparse matrix computation. These include dissection
strategies, the minimum degree algorithm, "throw-
away" techniques, and some ideas based on matrix
splitting. In addition to describing the algorithms
and techniques, some unsolved problems associated
               with them will be discussed.

Coffee and refreshment will be served at 3:00 PM pri-
               or to the talk.
