[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] TCP/IP programming library for PC's

arena@goethe.UUCP (mike arena) (04/12/91)

I am looking for an implementation of TCP/IP on the PC which provides
a programming library. I would only need the PC to act as a client.

Specifically, I am looking for the socket family of functions (socket(),
connect(), etc.)

I don't need TELNET or FTP (but that wouldn't preclude me from buying the
package).

Also, if SLIP or even dialup SLIP are supported, I would be very interested.

I have information about SUN's PC-NFS product and it seems that it would do
all that I want (plus NFS), however, it costs $395 per PC. I would prefer
a product which either had a lower run-time system cost or a library which
would not need a run-time distribution (i.e. all of the TCP/IP facilities my
program uses would be linked into my application).

FTP Software's dev kit costs (I think) about $500, but you can license
a kernel-and-configuration-only run time for around $150 or so. (You
better verify those numbers; it's been a while since I knew them for
sure) You can ask info@ftp.com for more details. The dev kit includes
sockets.
