[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Why a packet size limit of 512 for SOSS?

robert@swanee.ee.uwa.oz.au (Roberto Togneri) (05/02/91)

Hi,
I just gotten SOSS installed and running on one of our PC's. For
of those of you interested SOSS allows a PC to act as a nfs server.
The executables, etc. can be obtained from soe.sun.clarkson.edu in
/pub/ka9q. However due to the packet limit of 512 bytes writing to
our MOD drive is excruciatingly slow.

Why is there a limit of 512 on the packet size? This seems to come
from the PC/IP stuff. Is there a way of recompiling pcip so that
the maximum packet size is greater than 512 (by changing some defines)?
Or is there a reason for the maximum packet size being 512?
For what its worth I have the sources to soss, rpc and pcip.

If anybody can help I'd appreciate it.
