Mr. Al Paeth of Xerox Palo Alto Research Center will
speak on "PIXELPLANES - Adding a New Dimension to
               VLSI-based Computer Graphics".

               ROOM: M&C 5158

               ABSTRACT

This talk describes Pixelplanes, a high-performance,
VLSI-based graphics system, designed and implemented
at the PARC/VLSI Systems Design Area in collaboration
with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Pixelplanes employs algorithms which are a departure
from traditional rendering methods, but are nonethe-
less quite amenable to wafer-scale hardware implemen-
tations. Our device hardware supports one unifying
algorithm, which in turn provides area filling, hid-
den surface elimination, viewport clipping and color
shading, with running time proportional to scene com-
plexity and independent of image size.

The talk will give an overview of some traditional
problems of 3D scene rendering, discuss the Pixel-
plane architecture and software in detail, and con-
clude with a discussion of the implications of the
               existence of such a system.

Coffee and refreshments will be served at 6:30 PM.
