In order to transition one of our Ethernet segments from a class C network to a subnet of our class B net, I've configured it as two logical networks, 192.5.104 and 131.239.32. I had to configure this interface on our cisco router to use 255.255.255.255 as its broadcast address, because it doesn't know enough to use the appropriate subnet-specific broadcast address for the logical subnet it wants to send to. This means that hosts on the 131.239.32 subnet see RIP broadcasts intended for 192.5.104 hosts, and vice versa. Routed on these hosts spits out lots of "Packet from unknown router" messages for the broadcasts from the other logical subnet. Does anyone know how to get routed to shut up about these? They're annoying the users and they fill up /var/adm/messages, making it difficult to find real messages. -- Barry Margolin, Thinking Machines Corp. barmar@think.com {uunet, harvard}!think!barmar
