[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] PPP and SLIP help

lbrooks@shl.com (Lyle Brooks) (06/01/91)

I'm looking for information on PPP (Point to Point Protocol) and
possibly SLIP. If anyone could explain them and what the differences
are and/or point me to some documentation I would greatly appreciate
it.

What I'm looking to do is have serious dial-up connectivity to a LAN, none
of this XMODEM, Kermit, terminal emulation, remote login stuff.
I'm looking to use a portable PC running UNIX and TCP/IP to dial in
to a LAN and NFS mount a file system, send mail, do host to host
communication, etc. Because its a portable as well as cost factors, T1 and
dedicated lines are not an alternative.

Thanks in advance, and forgive me if this is in a FAQ list.
