Dr. D.B. Duncan of Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., will
speak on "A Petrov-Galerkin Method for the Approxi-
mate Solution of a Class of Hyperbolic Conservation
               Laws".

               ABSTRACT

The Petrov-Galerkin method using linear basis func-
tions and more general test functions is derived for
a class of Hyperbolic conservation laws with the gen-
eral form (pd = partial derivative)

                             pd u/pd t = (pd/pd x)f(u)

Following the usual approach to the solution of non-
linear equations of this type, the linear model prob-
lem given by f(u) = u is examined first and the
results obtained are used as a guide to the construc-
tion of a method for the general non-linear problem.

The flexibility of the Petrov-Galerkin method for
this problem is discussed and comparisons made with
other related approaches. The limitations of using a
linear problem as a model for this general class of
               equations are also highlighted.
