[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] how to arp for a non local address.

werner@pandora.inesc.pt (Werner Hans Peter Vogels) (06/11/91)

I would like to use arp to resolve some other addresses then those of the
local network. I have my own arp daemon to respond to these questions, but I
fail to set up the environment correctly that the right questions are made.

If I do a "route add net 224.0.0.0 mymachine 0" (yes, I am experimenting with
multicast IP) not only the address resolution for this address goes through
arps but all the other address resolutions as well. (we have a "route add 0
gateway 2" standard routing for the outside world)

What should I do to make the address resolution for a number of networks
go through arp and all other will be send to the gateway.

Thanks in advance.
