[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Historical questions on Ethernet

dberry@sei.cmu.edu (Daniel Berry) (06/12/91)

I am not in the networks area. Hence there are a number of historical questions
I have which I cannot easily answer.

Please send me either answers or pointers to where the information is
published..

1. Were the first massive non-Xerox-private installations of Ethernet in
universities (as opposed to commercial customers)?

2. Regardless of where Ethernet was installed first, did its installation
at universities contribute (e.g., as with UNIX) to its commercial success?

3. Did Ethernet connectivity to the Internet influence Ethernet growth?

4. What equipment was used to connect LANs to the Internet's WAN?

5. Was there any particular Ethernet equipment that succeeded primarily
because it was able to connect LANs to the Internet's WAN? If so, were the
first external installations of this equipment at universities?

6. What is the current size of the Internet and all networks connected to
it (any measure, e.g., no of nodes)?

Thanks
Dan
