     ABSTRACT

Five years ago the Computer Science Laboratory (CSL) of
Xerox Palo Alto Research Centre decided that it needed
a new interactive programming environment, building on
experience with the Interlisp mesa and Smalltalk sys-
tems. Four years ago CSL decided to base it on the
Mesa language and began in earnest to design and build
a Cedar programming environment. The first version of
the system, after a two year gestation period in it's
Mesa womb, had it's umbilical cord cut about 1.5 years
ago and has been in day-to-day use (by others than its
implementors) for about one year now, while still un-
     dergoing extensive development.

In this seminar we will give a brief overview of Cedar
to set the context for showing a videotape of the sys-
tem in operation. The tape shows many of the features
of the system as they were in February 1983. When the
tape is finished we will discuss what has been learned
in the process of developing the system and give a
     brief description of future directions.
