References: Sender: Followup-To: I got an express airmail copy that was described as "hot off the release disks" and it arrived on the 22nd of January. It is therefore released..... isn't it? :-) All the comments I have heard from Sun about SunView, SunCORE and SunCGI essentially suggested that getting the X11/NeWS merged product was the top priority. From what I remember of a meeting with Amy Christen at the end of last year: * SunView will be on top of the merged product * the pixrect stuff will fade away, but the higher level suntools/sunwindows stuff will remain * Sun have no plans to support SunCGI or SunCORE under NeWS * Maybe some of the X fans will provide PHIGS+ for X, in which case Sun might use that for those that want it. * Sun view NeWS partly as an opportunity to sell fancy graphics hardware For what it's worth, I am committed to giving a joint paper at the Sun User Group European Conference about a team effort to provide SunView facilities in PostScript, intended to offer minimum violence to existing SunView source code. The test vehicle is the iconedit program, and so far all the violence seems to be to do with the rasterop stuff (surprise surprise). For UK and European sites, I run a "NeWS Information Server" which has some assorted bits and pieces (more welcomed!) including the SunView stuff when it's done, and a 3D viewing model written entirely in PostScript. Interested people should mail news-server@uk.ac.qmc.cs with a single line message saying "help" in lowercase letters. -- William Roberts ARPA: liam@cs.qmc.ac.uk (gw: cs.ucl.edu) Queen Mary College UUCP: liam@qmc-cs.UUCP LONDON, UK Tel: 01-980 4811 ext 3933
