     ABSTRACT

The Computing Laboratory has developed software which
     allows a number of interconnected UNIX$ "" sup * $ sys-
tems to appear as a single system to both users and ap-
plication programs. This software, called the ``New-
castle Connection'' does not require changes to the
UNIX kernel or the application programs. The talk will
describe the appearance of UNIX united to a user and
the implementation techniques employed by the Newcastle
     Connection.
