[comp.windows.news] NeWS or X - does it make any sense to ask which to choose?

The best guess seems to be that asking for a choice between NeWS and X
is going to become increasingly irrelevant. Sun's window system will
support both. Despite various grumblings of discontent, I expect the
major Unix vendors to follow suit (particularly if System V as
distributed by ATT -- which most vendors are licensed for -- comes to
include the NeWS/X code. As I recall, the Sun/ATT announcements imply
that this will be the case). At that point, it's going to look a lot
like an argument over whether Fortran or C is "better": people will
pick the system that seems to make it easiest to develop their
application. End users won't be very much affected, since you can
implement a given style of user interface with either system, and
those applications will co-exist. We won't get rid of either X or
NeWS, any more than we'll get rid of any of the major programming
languages, because there will be lots of developers who feel it is the
best way to get their job done.
