Does anybody know how compatable Sunview will be with NeWS? I have seen many of the recent postings on how NeWS is supporting colour, (Using a fixed colour table for an 8-bit screen), so how will the Sunview color maps fit into this? Also how are special devices such as graphics processors going to be fitting into the NeWS/X11 system? Will there be some way to access such devices using the NeWS system or will we have to access them directly? Thanks, Sam Richards, University College London.

Sun released a paper entitled "Sunview Direction Statement" (January '88, I believe) which discussed these issues. To summarize briefly: Sunview 2.0 will be based on the new merged NeWS/X11 server. The server will handle any device specificities, so Sunview programs which use old (pre Sunview) Sunwindows calls, and some Pixrect and CGI calls may not work under Sunview 2. Sun also stated that for the first release of Sunview 2, Sunview 1.1 compatibility would remain. If you are using a device which is connected to the machine on which the client is running you could still manipulate the color map, etc. directly, but that would undo any benefit of going to a device independent client/server based system. Your friendly Sun rep. should have copies of the paper ... Scott Nye. nye@tis.llnl.gov
