could somebody substantiate a rumour i heard
that claimed Columbia ported NeWS to hp9000's?

Yes, NeWS runs on HP 9000/300 workstations with the "topcat" color display
card.  A little more work would be needed to get it running on the monochrome
or "catseye" color cards, but I don't have any of those to play with.
