Sure it been done (AT&T 630), but this way is easer. In chatting with the original author of psterm, the motivation for this behavior was not because it was simpler. At the time, he was looking for a way of testing the font scaling code, and he figured having people in-house creating random-sized windows would be one good way. Of course, at that time psterm was not intended as a product.
