[comp.windows.news] Reference NeWS 1.1 under SunOS4.0

claire@stan.UUCP (Claire Campbell) (07/28/88)

Hi!

I am attempting to get Reference NeWS 1.1 running on Sun4's under
SunOS4.0. I have been working with Sun's Portable Software Group
and between us, NeWS is now up and running. I do have a few recur-
ring problems that have me stumped however. Is anyone out there
attempting this same thing? If so, I'd love to exchange notes and
ideas about how it's going!

My current and elusive problem is:
Occasionally, (most often following a core dump of the news_server,
but not always), when I bring NeWS up it looks great -- Until I move
the mouse. Then the main menu begins flashing around on the screen,
tending toward the lower right corner, whenever the mouse moves. I
can find no way to regain control of NeWS in this situation, and end
up having to kill the server. In order to run NeWS correctly again,
I have to REBOOT the system. In my PostScript error file I get lines
and lines of:

: Operation would block
out of sync

My only current thoughts are that:
1. It is SunOS4.0 related.
2. The mouse is getting out of wack. Is there a way to manually clear
a mouse? (I've tried just unplugging it.)
3. When the news_server dies, it may leave some PostScript "downloaded"
somewhere and this doesn't get cleared when started back up. In
the PS manuals I've seen references to PS writing out to a file that
will then be read back in next time. Anyone know about this?
4. This is still a real long shot, but it does seem that this behavior
shows up most often following a lot of X use on the same device.
Maybe X doesn't clean up the mouse or NeWS expects to be the only
one to ever use something out there that X also uses?

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have reported
this problem to the Portable Software Group at Sun, and I must say, even
though this is an unsupported configuration, they've been really good about
working with me!

Thanks!
	Claire
