[comp.windows.news] landscape psview and psterm sluggishness

roy@phri.UUCP (Roy Smith) (08/03/88)

Does anybody know how to get pages sizes other than 8-1/2 x 11
using psview?  I'm specifically interested in 11 x 8-1/2 (i.e. landscape
mode) but it would be nice if there was a general procedure for specifying
the page size.

BTW, yesterday (and earlier) I complained about the slowness of
psterm. Columbia!chris pointed out that if you have enough idle machines
you should run a news server on your workstation and psterm on another
machine to split the load between 2 CPUs. Actually, I think it's more that
you get to use twice the physical memory that makes the difference. Even
better, do an rlogin to yet a third machine to do your real work. I tried
it and it does make indeed make a difference. I can still out-type psterm,
but at least windows come up a lot faster (almost instantaneously). I
don't know what I'm going to do comes September when there aren't any idle
machines, but that's another problem.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if two people on two
workstations, each running psterms on each others CPUs to their own news
servers wouldn't see better overall performance than if they each ran local
psterms. With a local psterm, when I do something, both my psterm and my
server have to wake up at the same time. WIth cross-psterms, you don't
have this synchronous CPU demand peaking. Just a guess.
