Prof. John Kender of Columbia University will speak on ``Robotics and Computer Vision.'' TIME: 3:30 PM ROOM: MC 5158 ABSTRACT Should you own a mechanical man? This talk reviews the state of the art of the field of robotics. The field has three major objectives: the construction of accu- rate and efficient manipulators, the creation of hardware and software to allow computers to speak and hear, and the development of intelligent robotic eyes. The talk describes, for each objective, what is avail- able, what is being developed, and what criteria should be applied to decide on the effectiveness of a particu- lar possible purchase. No robot that is introduced into the factory or office is without effect; the human and legal issues are explored as well. The talk con- cludes with some speculation on what the robot of the future will do, say, think, and feel. Coffee and refreshments will be served at 3:00 PM. November 22, 1983
