[] About 3 weeks ago I suggested a newsgroup for radio controlled airplanes. The response has been fairly favorable, with comments that the discussion should not be limited to just airplanes. Because no previous discussion relating to RC has taken place on the net, several people expressed concern that this would just be a "flash-in-the- pan" newsgroup, with interest dying soon after formation. To test this idea, we will post our discussions in net.ham-radio for awhile to see just how much hard-core interest there really is. If discussion continues for an extended period of time, we will be able to form our own group. If anyone (especially the regulars in net.ham-radio) objects to this plan, speak now or forever (till we get our own group) hold your peace. Anyone with an interest in RC or modeling in general is encouraged to take part in these discussions. With over 100,000 people involved worldwide in RC aircraft, I expect good results on our net. -- Scott Wiesner {allegra, ucbvax, cornell}!nbires!scott

After much discussion about this topic, the conclusion of many is that since the Radio Control Hobby is considered a recreational hobby, one should expect to find it in net.rec and a sub-title called net.rec.rc be generated if the traffic warrants it on a continuing basis. It is true that the R/C hobby started using ham frequencies and hams were the only ones that could run the equipment. That was in the 1930s. There are still frequencies in the 53 MHZ band (6 meter ham band) that are authorized for use by hams that wish to fly R/C. The fact that many new frequencies are available to the R/C community, that are not in the ham bands, and that the majority of the modelers use those and not the ham bands, one can conclude that ham-radio is not the place for the R/C guys. I am a ham (W9LXP) and DO use 6 meters for some of my R/C activity. In spite of this, I feel that net.rec is the place for us (the R/C group at this time). As a ham, and an R/C buff, I would like to see us move it to the net.rec notes system.
