[comp.windows.news] Stop beating on the publisher !

rossbach@HUB.UCSB.EDU (Gerhard Rossbach) (05/27/89)

Dear Don Dwiggins,

I got your message through NeWS-makers-request. We at Springer are as anxious
as you to get The NeWS Book out. We just got the manuscript from the authors in
April and we have dropped everything else to get the book out for SIGGRAPH
which starts July 31. The price will be $39.95 and the ISBN is 0-387-96915-2.

If you want to buy The NeWS Book, you can call 1-800-Springer or go to a
technical bookstore.

Best regards

Lets be fair here! Complaints about the book being late should be addressed
to me and my fellow authors not to Springer (who seem to be working far
faster than we ever did!). In our defense, all I can say is that writing
a book like this is incredibly hard work, and doing it in your spare
time while working full-time on the software it describes is even harder.

In the interests of fairness to Springer and the authors, I should perhaps
clarify. I had seen the book (a beta copy?) in the Springer booth at a
conference, and inferred that it was available; I was attempting to minister
to the frustrations of the fellow who'd been trying to get it. I probably
should have put smileys around "beat on"; what I *really* meant was "ask
politely". My apologies for any bruises sustained; I do appreciate the
labor, time, and pain involved in giving birth to such an opus.
