I'm sorry if this subject has been discussed before and I missed it, but... It appears that during a long writecanvas the NeWS server does absolutely nothing else except write to the specified output device, including not servicing the mouse. This is a particular problem when the canvas being written is about 1 Mbytes in size. This takes from 30 seconds, to a couple of minutes, depending on where the file is going (local disk, or network). Does anyone have a workaround for 1.1, or can a beta tester tell me if X11/NeWS works the same way? Thanks (wishful thinking) Regards, Paul Matz PPG Biomedical Systems One Campus Drive Pleasantville, NY. 10570 914-741-4685 path ppgbms!moe!paul@philabs.philips.com

The problem is that NeWS does not have preemptive scheduling. This is a major mod which has not been implemented to date, including in the X11/NeWS server. At my usenix NeWS tuturial, Owen Densmore commented that anyone who was interseted in writing one for NeWS should come talk to him after class... ;-) --kt ({hoptoad, uunet}!syzygy!ktk )
