Mr. H. Redelmeier of the University of Toronto will speak on ``Interactive Functional Programs.'' TIME: 2:30 PM (Please Note) ROOM: MC 5158 ABSTRACT Some programs must be able to interact, that is, be able to interleave input and output operations. Con- sider, for example, how a text editor must be able to reply to each command before requiring the next com- mand. Interactive behaviour cannot be described in most functional languages. Previous techniques to en- able interaction, such as ``lazy evaluation'' destroy some of the elegance and simplicity of a functional language. We propose a new technique that preserves the advantages of functional languages. February 10, 1984
