UofT Department of Computer Science Seminar Schedule for
the week of February 20th, 1984

Tuesday, February 21st, 4:00 P.M., GB244: J. Farrell, Sun Micro
Systems, "Window systems and the user interface in personal
   workstations".

   ABSTRACT:

Current trends are towards dedicated processors for individual users. The
new generation of such systems generally includes reasonably high resolution
graphics, a pointing device, and good communications through a local area
network. Such dedicated systems are clearly changing the way we think about
computing. This is true for the computing professional as well as the
user of canned applications software. With this new way of thinking, there
must also come a new approach to the user interface of such systems.
Otherwise, much of the inherent potential will not be realized. This
presentation will focus on issues of user interface design, using the
speaker's experience in designing the window manager for the Sun II
   system as a case study.
