   "Automatically fitting splines to pictures".

ABSTRACT: For publication quality graphics, it is important to
have a resolution independent representation for text and illustrations.
One way to achieve this is to describe the outline of each shape as a
parametric cubic curve or *spline*. Producing such a representation
for a complex image, however, can be a tedious task. This talk will
describe a method for automatically generating efficient spline
approximations from sampled data. Using this algorithm, it is
possible for a designer to sketch or scan a shape and let the computer
define the curves for the outline.
