[comp.windows.news] OpenWindows portability?

rudolf@turing.ac.uk (Jim Rudolf) (06/04/91)

I would like to find out what the chances are of using NeWS on non-Sun
hardware. Essentially, it's the same as asking about the chances of
using OpenWindows on non-Sun hardware. I have heard (at least second-
hand) of two possibilities:

1) Sun has contracted out to third parties to port OpenWindows to
    other platforms.

2) While OpenWindows will be a part of SVR4, AT&T has apparently said
that NeWS will be an optional part.

Can anyone confirm or deny these rumors? Any light on this subject would
be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

I think X/NeWS is rather Portable, I hacked the OpenWindows 1.0 release
that came with System V 4.0 to run on this old Sun3/160 running SunOS 3.2
(with 3.4 Upgrade) without too much trouble; though I must admit that
X11R4 was trivial.

I've heard OpenWindows is being ported to other platforms, but I didn't
hear that Sun was contracting it out. Though considering the quality of
the code it seems it might be a good market decision.

Thats right it is, works like a Gem on the 386.

Oh, by the way, I'm using HyperNeWS 3.0 from The Turing Institute for
Lock Manager documentation; it's great. Is there going to be a
OpenWindows 2.0 and/or tNt 2.0 release from Turing?
