UofT Department of Computer Science Seminar Schedule for
the week of April 23rd, 1984

Thursday, April 26th, 4:00 P.M., GB244, Professor Mark Green,
University of Alberta, Edmonton: "A model and notations for
   User Interface Management Systems".

ABSTRACT: The development of User Interface Management Systems
(UIMS) is one of the major research topics in the area of
human-computer interaction. A UIMS has two main purposes:
provide a single program module that handles all the interactions
between the user and the program, and provide tools for automatically
constructing all or part of this module. Over the past few years
a number of experimental UIMSs have been developed. On the surface
these systems appear to be quite different, making comparisons and
the transfer of experience difficult. In response to this problem,
one of the working groups at the Seeheim Workshop on User Interface
Management Systems (held in November 1983) concentrated on the
notations used in UIMSs. The major results of this study were a logical
model for the structure of a UIMS and a classification scheme for the
notations that have been used. In this talk the Seeheim model and
classification scheme will be discussed, along with its application
to the University of Alberta UIMS.
