UofT Department of Computer Science Seminar Schedule for
the week of June 18th, 1984

Thursday, June 21st, 11:00 A.M., GB244, Dr. A.J. Herbert, M.I.T.,
Laboratory for Computer Science: "The Mayflower distributed
   operating system".

ABSTRACT: The work in distributed computing at Cambridge has
centered around the Processor Bank--a pool of computers allocated
on demand to individual users. A particular feature of this
approach is that it is possible for the user to ask for a
collection of machines to be made available to him/her, lending
support to distributed applications. MAYFLOWER is an operating
system intended to facilitate the implementation of such applications.
It is based on the CLU language, extended to support process
monitors and remote procedure calls. A very local view of
communication and control of distribution has been adopted in contrast
to many other distributed operating system projects.

The seminar will describe the processor bank, the MAYFLOWER
extensions to CLU and the communication primitives. The relationship
between MAYFLOWER and the processor bank resource manager will be
explored, and some potential applications will be presented.
