From the DCS seminar listings: Colloquium Tuesday Oct 30 1100 SF1105 Mike Lesk of Bellcore "Helping the Lost and Confused: Computer Retrieval of Books and Maps" I won't reproduce the abstract, but it sounds interesting. Stuff on large databases, how people search them, how machines should search them. For those of you who don't know who Lesk is, here's the bio that came with the abstract: Dr. Lesk has a PhD in Chemical Physics, Harvard 1969. Studied the RF spectrum of metastable carbon monoxide. Was at Bell Labs in Computer Science research 1969-83, and is now manager of Computer Science research at Bellcore. Worked on information retrieval, text processing (tbl, -ms, refer), networking (uucp), compilers (lex, early cpp and C libraries), and other software hacking problems. Is major user of disk space. -- Henry Spencer @ U of Toronto Zoology {allegra,ihnp4,linus,decvax}!utzoo!henry
