[comp.compilers] Intermediate Code Size for Phases of Compilation

Given the standard phases of compilation:

	1)  Lexical Analysis
	2)  Parsing
	3)  Semantic Analysis
	4)  Code Generation

has there been any research done comparing the size of the intermediate
code produced by each phase, to the size of the input to that phase or 
to the size of the original program text.
