[comp.std.unix] recent standards activity

std-unix@uunet.UU.NET (Moderator, John S. Quarterman) (11/15/87)

There's not been much activity in this newsgroup lately.
This is slightly surprising, consdiring the amount of activity
about standards lately:

The USENIX POSIX Portability Workshop, resulting in many
comments and objections being fed into the IEEE 1003.1 balloting.

The NBS POSIX Implementation Workshop, producing input to NBS
about their proposed Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS).

The publication of two documents on POSIX by /usr/group, and the
creation of newsgroups related to the /usr/group Technical Committee.

Balloting on IEEE P1003.1 during the thirty days starting 15 November
(tomorrow).

Concurrent balloting on the same draft of P1003.1 as an ISO draft standard.

Announcements by Sun and AT&T of a joint plan for future development
of UNIX, incorporating both hardware and software.

A decision by the General Services Administration (GSA) regarding
the protest by DEC of an Air Force RFP that specified System V and SVVS.

Quiet progress by P1003.2 and the other P1003 subcommittees.

Some discussion of these things might be interesting.
