UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE ACTIVITIES FOR THE WEEK COMMENCING MARCH 4, 1985 (SS = Sidney Smith Hall, 100 St. George) MATHEMATICS/COMPUTER SCIENCE COLLOQUIUM - Wed., March 6, 3:10p.m., SS 2108 Professor Ed Dubinsky ACM/MAA Institute for Retraining in Computer Science Clarkson University 9"Computer Experiences as an Aid in Learning Mathematics Concepts" Abstract It is generally agreed that many undergraduate stu- dents, even after acquiring the techniques of a mathematical subject, do not understand the abstract concepts. In this paper, the reasons for the difficulty are discussed theoret- ically, leading to suggestions of a new type for computer experiences which might assist in learning such concepts. Experiments are described in which such experiences were used in Clarkson undergraduate courses, and the effect tested.
