[comp.std.unix] Changes in IEEE Standards Numbers

From: John S. Quarterman <jsq@usenix.org>

The IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Operating Systems
(IEEE/CS TCOS) is the group that sponsors the IEEE 1003 (POSIX),
IEEE 1201, etc. standards committees related to the UNIX operating
system. TCOS (in the form of its Standards Executive Committee, or SEC)
recently approved a number of requests for work on new documents or for
the formation of new committees, as has been reported previously in
this newsgroup.

These Project Authorization Requests (PARs) then had to be approved by
the IEEE Standards Board (SB), which met a few weeks ago. The SB
usually approves everything TCOS sends them, and in fact did so this
time. However, they changed many of the characteristic numbers that
identify the committees from the numbers that were proposed in the PARs
and sent to SB by TCOS, and they also changed some of the titles slightly.

Some sort of revised compendium of the current TCOS-sponsored committees
will appear in this newsgroup soon, but in the meantime, here is a brief
list of the specific changes. The appended information comes from Jim Isaak,
IEEE/CS TCOS Chair.

1003.1a is now 1003.1 (a revision of a standard, takes on the full number)

1003.1b is now 1003.1a (because of the elevation of the above item)

1003.4b is a revision of 1003.4, and as such is a NEW PAR for 1003.4 !!

1003.4c is now 1003.4b (because of the elevation of the above item)

without a .13 and .15, all those numbered higher have been advanced:

1003.14 is now 1003.13 (Bill Corwin gets the lucky number)

1003.16 is now 1003.14 (Bob Knighten & co)

1003.17 is now 1003.15 (Batch for SC)

1238.1 is 1238 (foundation document)
1238.2 is now 1238.1 (dependent document)

title of 1003.2 has had "Part 2:" added (we dropped it by mistake in my office)

title of 1238 documents has had "PART #" removed in both cases.

title of 1237 is now .... Application Program Interface for RPC.

Title of 1003.2a has a comma added "shell and utilities, ..."

Volume-Number: Volume 20, Number 24
