"The Transition from Data to Knowledge Management"

                          Abstract

A knowledge management system extends the capabilities of data
management to include the storage, maintenance, and utilization
of large quantities of application-specific expertise (encoded as
rules) as well as the ability to manipulate substantial quantities
of concrete facts (realized as tuples in a relational database).

We will discuss progress in the area of Logic & Databases during the
next few years towards the realization of such systems and will
describe the capabilities and limitations of current prototypes.
Steps that appear to be necessary in order to meet future functionality
and performance objectives will be identified and some possible solutions
to current problems will be outlined.
