[comp.sys.masscomp] Please help!!

Why can't our /etc/gpc/windowman access tty4?

We are a site with a single MC-500 running 4.2BSD Unix. We also
have the SP-40 version 2.5 graphics package.

Two weeks ago, our system crashed when it ran out of memory during
execution of a program. In attempting to get it working again,
(cleaning up the disk) the file /dev/tty4 was inadvertantly rm'ed
(removed). This, of course, caused /etc/gpc/windowman to complain
that it couldn't access tty4 (it wasn't there).

To correct this problem, I have used mknod(8) to create tty4,
which worked, but still windowman could not access it! I have tried
changing the mode (chmod), changing the ownership, everything, but
to no avail.

Could someone kindly email me some advice on how to correct this
problem? Our only guru seems to be on vacation at the moment, and
I need to get some work done! Thanks in advance,

Wayne Young

[ Moderator's note: I don't think the writer intends to say
4.2BSD Unix, since that does not run on the Masscomp. It probably
means that he is running 3.0 RTU or higher.]

[Did you have to rebuild the kernel following this crash? If so,
there may be some needed pseudo devices left out. I would suggest that
you completly reinstall sp-40 and sp-43 and see if that helps...
By the way, you only need the windowmamanger for window operations.
You should be able to do other graphics just fine... -- sob, moderator]

[Addtional note: Some of you may have been following discussion about this
newsgroup and moderated newsgroups in general I have been having
with webber@rutgers in news.groups and news.stargate...It should be noted
that I received 6 copies of this message. I only posted one...that might
say something about the value of a moderator, or it may say something about
the poor implementation of the moderators mechanism....anyway, just thought
I'd point that out. -- sob]
