I have noticed that Masscomp's assign does not seem to recognize special device files for tape drives that are created for an XMT controller by "sysconfig tape". On systems with MT controllers, assign appears to behave properly. Due to a major case of wetware head crash, I can't remember when this appeared or if it ever worked. You have to remember to specifiy the bpi you want. "assign 6250" is different from "assign 1600" in what devices it links to /dev/rmt0 and so on. -- sob]
