Our tape drive, a generic Cipher F88 1/2" 1600 BPI drive that Masscomp sells
with it's own nameplate, died recently. I talked with Masscomp, and they
said that they do not fix and charge for parts and labor. Instead, they
have a swap-only policy, and the fixed price for this is $1800. I called
Cipher, based in San Diego, and they said that if we shipped it to them they
would fix the drive for $637 for parts and labor. This does not cover
missing parts, or massive replacement, in which case they call you and tell
you before they actually do any repairs.
I don't have their number with me, but I can get it tomorrow. People really
need alternative repair sources. In my opinion, Masscomp's repair policy is
too rigid and far too expensive.
