                   "An Input-Output Model
                  for Interactive Systems"

                          Abstract

I discuss an aspect of programming that is frequently
neglected and describe how recent developments in computing
technology will force us to rethink old habits. The
neglected aspect of programming is input-output; the recent
developments in technology are interactive personal worksta-
tions with high- performance displays, and the old habits
are program organizations appropriate to batch processing.
I will suggest a new view of input and output and suggest a
new program organization strategy appropriate to interactive
software.
