[comp.sys.masscomp] TeX- and METAFONT-in-C on Masscomps

rick@soma.neuro.bcm.tmc.edu (Rick Gray) (08/07/88)

I'm pleased to report that Tim Morgan's routines (release 2.2) to
convert TeX, Metafont, and the TeXware programs from WEB source code to
C source code work almost perfectly on Masscomps with RTU (Real-Time
Unix) v4.0 and C v1.3. The compilation was done on a 5700. I don't
have access to a 68010 or 68030 machine, so I can't say whether it will
work as well on one of those.

The only changes needed are to:

1) edit site.h to define the location of font files and macros on your
system, and to define either SYSV or BSD, depending on which
universe you prefer. Both TeX & metafont compiled fine in
either universe, although for the makefile to automatically
undump virtex to make tex you need to use the ucb universe.
If you use the att universe you merely need to run undump
yourself. Triptex compiled in either universe passes the trip
	test with no errors.

2) If the C optimizer is used to build trapmf, it will core dump with
a floating point error during the trap test. Removing the
"-O" from CFLAGS in the Makefiles for mf will produce a trapmf
that passes the trap test with no errors. I haven't tracked
down the source of this problem yet.

If you got a copy of the Masscomp TeX tape from the Masscomp Users
Group library, are running RTU 4.0 & C v1.3 on a 68020 machine, and are
serious about using TeX, LaTex or mf I suggest you get the complete
UNIX TeX distribution from the University of Washington at the
following address:

I believe the current handling charge for the tape is US$160, but you
should check with them to make sure.
