We have a masscomp 6700 with 4 cpu's and 24 meg of memory, and have been plagued with problems ever since its purchase. Specifically, we have been having a problem with the following error message: fpalloc: System wide open file limit exceeded This pops up on the console. Any successive job by another user gets this on his login window: /etc/mtab file table overflow Incidently, we are running Xwindows. This problem seems to crop up when we run compression routines. (we are doing some testing of a variety of compression techniques) and we consequently have a large amount of pipes and processes running. Masscomp suggested raising the inode and nfile variables in the configuration file from what we had a couple of days ago (300) to what we have now (400). But it didn't work. If anyone else has had problems with their 6700 we would like to hear about it. Our load balancing, for example, doesn't seem to work as advertised. sun workstations with a single 68020 run faster then the masscomp with it's 4 68030's. In addition, the tape drive takes about 1 and 1/2 hours to load up a full 6250 1/2 inch tar format tape. Is this correct? It seems awefully slow to me.
