You may be happy or unhappy to know that Sun accepts bug reports in the standard "4bsd-bugs" format, mailed to sun!sunbugs. As usual with Sun, there is no acknowledgement that they received it or will do anything about it, but at least emailed bugs go into the same bug-tracking database as paper mailed bugs; in fact, somebody has to type in the paper ones. Also, you can cc the bug report to somebody who might actually *fix* the bug rather than just track it! When I worked at Data General in 1979 there were two ways to report bugs. One was for customers and "important stuff" and it was about 17''x11'' full of little boxes you had to fill in with irrelevant information. The other way was a mimeographed 8.5x11 form which asked what program was being reported, what release of the OS, what problem you had, and what suggestions you had about fixing it. 80% of the page was blank space. In my 9 months at DG I submitted over 100 bug reports and suggestions on this form, which was only available to DG employees, and none on the cumbersome forms. Maybe horrible bug report forms are a Boston phenomenon? Do DEC and Prime have the same problem? -- {sun,ptsfa,lll-crg,ihnp4,ucbvax}!hoptoad!gnu gnu@ingres.berkeley.edu Kudos to Stargate for permitting redistribution. May the Source be with you!

John - You may be happy or unhappy to know that Apollo accepts bug reports in the UCR format, mailed to ucr_admin@apollo.uucp. As usual with Apollo, we WILL do something about it, since it is entered into the same bug-tracking database as paper mailed ucr's. Your response will be transmitted via snail mail, so please make certain the report includes the necessary mailstop and postal code information. Phone numbers are a big plus, since there are many times a conversation with the originator proves helpful. ...walt... PS - noticed your kudos to Stargate and the report of your breakfast meeting. Thanks for your (apparently successful) campaign. -- Walt Weber PHONE: (617) 256-6600 x7004 Apollo Computer GENIE: W.WEBER Chelmsford, People's Republic of Massachusetts
