[comp.sys.apollo] SR9.6 status

krowitz@mit-kermit.UUCP (David Krowitz) (09/02/87)

I recently received a software distribution tape containing
the SR9.6 versions of CC, FTN, and PAS - the compilers we
have under maintainance contract, but not the SR9.6 AEGIS
or DOMAIN/IX. I have heard two conflicting stories so far.
One is that SR9.6 is a complete release going to customers
who reported bugs in SR9.5.1, the other is that SR9.6 is
not a general release of AEGIS/DOMAIN/IX -- only the
compilers are going out. Both of these stories came from
different people at Apollo. Does anyone out there know
what the *real* story is? Should I be expecting/asking for
a complete release tape?

    I recently received a software distribution tape containing
    the SR9.6 versions of CC, FTN, and PAS - the compilers we
    have under maintainance contract, but not the SR9.6 AEGIS
    or DOMAIN/IX.

    Does anyone out there know what the *real* story is?

SR9.6 AEGIS is a complete software release that includes the latest bug fixes
post SR9.5 and has major enhancements such as support for Native Ethernet
(i.e. the ETHERNET software driver SFW-A-ADD-ETH is now obsolete since the
driver is part of the Aegis kernel at 9.6) support for eight planes of color
in the DN3000 and support for 348MB ESDI disks and 32MB main memory in the
DN5xx-T product family.

It was decided that this release would be distributed on an as needed basis and
not be a maintainence release which gets shipped to all Apollo customers. You
recieved the 9.6 compilers as part of your maintainence agreement for those products
but you will not automatically recieve SR9.6 unless you specifically required one of
the following 'new' products.

Hardware:
========
        Native Ethernet
        8 plane color DN3000
        32MB memory DN5xx-Turbo
        348 MB ESDI disk in DN5xx-Turbo

Software:
========
        Common Lisp 2.10 with Window Toolkit/Flavors/Editor (requires 9.6)

3rd Party Software: (These require CommonLisp 2.10 and therefore 9.6)
==================
        KEE     (from Intellicorp)
        MACSYMA (available from Symbolics Inc.)

I believe you can request a copy of SR9.6 from Apollo, if you would like to
upgrade your base software to this release.

Note: - The latest release of DOMAIN/IX is still SR9.5.
      - If you recieve a new 25Mhz DN4000 it will be running 9.6.1 (a DN4000 only release)
