[comp.sys.apollo] Apollo, Mentor, and Maintanence

kjb@zycad.UUCP (Kevin Buchs) (10/12/87)

Does anyone understand the crazy relationship between Apollo and
Mentor? Apparently, if you have an Apollo node purchased from Mentor,
(or under Mentor hardware maint.) then anything you add to that node,
hardware or software, must be maintained by Mentor. So we just did
a big trade in deal with Mentor. We decided to get our 8 ethernet
controllers from Apollo, since the same thing was $2000 cheaper. So we must
pay maintanence to Mentor for these? Another good one is DSEE, for which
we bought a site license. So we have both Apollo and Mentor nodes on which
it runs, and we must pay the more expensive combination of half our
network worth of copies to each Apollo and Mentor? Mentor doesn't even sell
DSEE? Why did Apollo agree to this stupid policy? By the way, what is
the policy? Our Mentor and Apollo salespeople cannot agree!
