DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO SEMINAR ACTIVITIES DATA STRUCTURING SEMINAR - Thursday, August 8, 1985. Miss C.B. Medeiros, a graduate student of this depart- ment, will speak on ``A New Approach to the View Update Problem.'' TIME: 2:30 PM (Please Note) ROOM: MC 5158 ABSTRACT A database view is the part of a database that is needed by an application. Views are generally employed to allow users to query (i.e., VIEW) some parts of the database without interfering with other users, and to prevent access to confidential information. Updates through views are usually forbidden, because a user might unknowingly destroy another's data. The presentation will show a new approach to updating through views, examining how views can actu- ally be designed to permit a large class of updates. This approach generalizes the results of other view design tools, and allows the view designer to specify and check the result of update operations which have been traditionally forbidden. This has the advantage of increasing the flexibility in designing user interfaces - more alternatives for acceptable updates are presented, and users are given more control over their application. The talk will focus on the issues of integrity constraint maintenance and side effect propagation. August 1, 1985
