Lyn I. Brady of Macquarie University will speak on
``Managing the Meaning of Data''.

ABSTRACT

This seminar examines the semantic issues which arise
from centralising data in a database and at the
representation of relationships between data which
results. It also looks at the current state of the
art, both in the theory and in practice, as it relates
to data and functional analyses. The semantics
represented by entities, relationships, their respec-
tive properties and the interaction which occurs
between data and programs is investigated. Fundamen-
tally, and confirmed in practice by case study, we find
serious problems in integrating these issues of
integrity and dynamically enforcing them. An
integrated, dynamic model is presented which represents
and could enforce the semantics modelled by data and
functional analyses and the semantics not modelled by
either.
