Can any kind soul tell me how I can set my system such that any user may select which environment he/she wants? My lab has DN3000 w/s running SR9.7. The setup I have in mind is available in SUN w/s. When a user go in front of a terminal, he see a glass tty prompting him to log in. After he logs in, he may still end up with a glass tty or he may get a suntools environment; depending on his .cshrc. His suntools environment in turn depends on his .suntools or whatever. The point is that he has all the flexibility that he needs and that is , in my opinion, unavailable on Apollo Domain/IX cum Aegis. I know that I may set up a ~/user_data/startup.19l where I delete the window created by `node_data/startup.19l. The default window (set up be `node_data/startup.19l) has a /com/sh running on it. Then in my ~/user_data/startup.19l, I creates a new window with /bsd4.2/bin/csh or /sys5/bin/csh. The problem is knowing where the default window is in order to kill it. Another thing, in the manual on /etc/crpasswd, it says that we must hand-edit the shell field in the /etc/passwd file. Well, I did that editing my (non-root) account. I change the field to /bsd4.2/bin/csh. But when I log in, I still get the default window cum /com/sh. Why?!! I don't like using ~/user_data/startup.19l to zap the default window and creating a new one -- it's just ain't elegant; nobody likes a kludge if there's a better way. Anyway, I don't know how to overwrite DM with X. I do not wish to have X running on top of the DM -- I believe it may not be as fast as X lying directly on top of the physical hardware. I cannot change `node_data/startup.19l and `node_data/start_login. 19l as the majority of our users use DM and com/sh. Myself, I use 4.2BSD extensively and I am currently considering migrating to X. Some of my colleagues and students are doing as same. Can anybody give me any pointers? Many thanks in advance. fclim gbopoly1 % nusvm.bitnet @ cunyvm.cuny.edu system analyst. computer centre singapore polytechnic dover road s'pore 0513.

One way we want to try logging into remote systems (whether they are running X-windows or no) is to use SLIP (Serial Line IP). Does anyone know if there are device drivers for this protocol on Apollo. I have access to source code for SLIP on SUN... -Thanks - John Hysell
